GameStop Keeps eBay in Play but Withholds Bid Details
GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen says the company is still pursuing eBay, but would not say whether it will raise the $56 billion offer Bloomberg identified or disclose the timing and structure of any next step. In a Bloomberg Technology interview, Cohen said GameStop is “coming for eBay one way or another,” while arguing that record earnings from a smaller store base justify management’s decision to keep its strategy and transaction terms private.
GameStop May Swap Its $56 Billion eBay Bid for a Partnership
GameStop may withdraw its proposed $56 billion bid for eBay after eBay rejected the approach and instead seek a partnership or joint venture, Bloomberg reports. Bailey Lipschultz says the companies could use GameStop’s 1,600 US stores to authenticate collectibles for eBay sellers, giving the marketplace a physical intake network without an acquisition. Spencer Soper cautions that similar efforts have struggled before, and that a store footprint alone does not establish customer demand or workable economics.
Cohen Proposes Turning GameStop Stores Into eBay Marketplace Infrastructure
GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen argues that his rejected roughly $56 billion bid for eBay would turn the marketplace into a larger, more profitable business by combining its platform with GameStop’s stores, gaming expertise and refurbished-technology operations. Cohen says the stores could serve as local hubs for authentication, fulfillment and live commerce, while $2 billion in first-year cost reductions would support the deal’s economics. He has offered broad assurances on financing and an investment-grade credit profile, but has not disclosed the proposed capital structure or said whether he will raise the bid.
Cohen’s $56 Billion eBay Bid Targets Costs, Sellers, and Digital Collectibles
GameStop chief executive Ryan Cohen is pitching a $56bn bid for eBay as an operating turnaround rather than a financial trade. In an All-In interview, Cohen argues that eBay’s marketplace remains valuable but has been mismanaged through weak growth, rising costs and damaged seller relationships, and says GameStop could cut $2bn in expenses while expanding eBay into live commerce and digital in-game collectibles. The fight, in his telling, is over whether eBay shareholders trust incumbent management or an owner-operator offering half cash, half GameStop stock.
