Robeauté Targets 2027 Human Trials for Brain Microrobot

Robeauté is developing rice-sized microrobots that it says could navigate through brain tissue to collect biopsies or deliver therapies directly to hard-to-reach sites. Chief executive Joana Cartocci argues that advances in drugs, gene therapies and AI will remain limited unless they can be placed precisely in the brain, bypassing obstacles such as the blood-brain barrier. The French startup plans to begin with advanced tumor biopsy in first-in-human studies targeted for 2027, before expanding to other uses.

The bottleneck is reaching the tissue, not only inventing therapies

Joana Cartocci describes Robeauté as an attempt to remove a physical constraint on treating brain disease: access to the relevant tissue. The company is developing a microrobotic device designed to navigate through the brain and deliver diagnostic tools or therapies locally.

Cartocci places the need across cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other dementias, and epilepsy. She says these conditions affect “one in three people” worldwide, and argues that difficulty physically reaching the brain has stifled innovation for decades.

Company visuals show the device held between a person’s thumb and index finger, and a tiny transparent component attached to a wire above surgical tools. Robeauté describes the planned devices as roughly the size of a grain of rice. Its materials frame the proposed platform around three functions—“diagnose,” “treat,” and “monitor.”

Drug innovation still needs a precise route into the brain

Joana Cartocci says advances in drugs, gene therapies, cell therapies, electrodes, and AI may create more potential interventions, but those interventions still need a way to be placed locally in the brain “exactly where they need to go and nowhere else.”

She identifies the blood-brain barrier as a particular obstacle for drugs. It separates material in the bloodstream from healthy brain tissue; when disease is present, she says, drugs cannot necessarily pass that barrier at the required concentration. Robeauté’s proposed alternative is direct local delivery.

Today, there are massive advances in not only AI and intelligence, but also in novel drugs, novel therapies, gene therapies, cell therapies, electrodes. And they all lack a way of physically being delivered locally, with the right precision in the brain exactly where they need to go and nowhere else.

Biopsy is the proposed first step toward broader use

Robeauté is pursuing its broader treatment ambitions through a staged development plan. Cartocci says the company has progressed through R&D, upscaled manufacturing, doubled its team over the prior year, and is engaged in preclinical studies while preparing for clinical work.

Cartocci says Robeauté is working with regulators in Europe and the United States to get the product to patients safely and as quickly as possible. When Mackenzie summarized the cadence as human studies in 2027 and potential market entry around 2030, she agreed while emphasizing that development will be staged.

“A micro-robot moving through the brain sounded like science fiction yesterday,” Cartocci says. For Robeauté, the initial biopsy use is meant to demonstrate safety before it pursues the wider diagnostic and local-delivery applications it describes.

Europe’s robotics base sits alongside fragmented market access

Joana Cartocci argues that Europe has substantial robotics talent, a deep research base, and particular strength in microrobotics. She calls it an exciting place to build the company.

Her concern is what follows development and certification. Cartocci says Europe still operates like a fragmented market when compared with the United States or China. Even with unified certification and a CE mark, she says, a company must still access markets independently from one another.

The problem, as Cartocci frames it, is that certification alone does not create uniform market access. She calls for a faster, smoother, more collaborative process and something closer to uniform access across the region.
