Apple Launches $1,999 Foldable iPhone Duo Above the Pro Max

Bloomberg’s Ed Ludlow reports that Apple has launched the iPhone Duo, its first foldable handset, starting at $1,999 and reaching $3,199—$700 above the entry price of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. In his first keynote as chief executive, John Ternus positioned the device as both a new premium tier and part of Apple’s push to make the iPhone an “intelligence personal hub,” while Apple’s case for arriving late to foldables rests on durability and a crease designed to be barely visible when opened.

Apple creates a new $1,999 tier above the Pro Max

Ed Ludlow reports that Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, at a starting price of $1,999, with configurations reaching $3,199. The device sits above the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which starts at $1,299—a $700 gap at entry level.

The Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which Ludlow described as offering improved processing and compute power. Its defining feature is the change in form: folded, it has a 5.4-inch display; opened, it expands to 7.6 inches. Ludlow characterized the fully unfolded device as more like an iPad product than a conventional phone.

John Ternus reserved the Duo for the presentation’s closing “one more thing” moment. Eight days into his tenure as Apple CEO, Ternus used his first full keynote to introduce both a new hardware category and a notably higher price point for the company’s phone lineup.

The commercial structure is clear. Apple’s conventional Pro Max now begins at $1,299, while the foldable category begins at $1,999 and reaches far beyond it. The larger unfolded workspace is the central distinction Ludlow identified between the Duo and Apple’s existing phones.

Apple’s late foldable bet rests on the hinge

Apple is entering a foldables market that Ludlow said it is late to, but its presentation emphasized the work done before launch: components, supply chain, durability, and the screen crease where the device folds.

Ludlow said the crease is marginal—or potentially difficult to see—when the Duo is open. That is central to Apple’s effort to present the unfolded display as a continuous large screen rather than a display visibly divided by its hinge. Durability received similar emphasis.

They might be late to the foldables market, but they took their time on the components, the supply chain, and here we are.

Apple’s differentiating case, as Ludlow described it, is therefore not simply that it has brought a foldable iPhone to market. It is that its time spent on the device’s components and supply chain has produced a more durable product with a reduced crease—features that matter particularly for a device starting at $1,999.

The Pro models rise $100 as the foldable arrives

The iPhone Duo was introduced alongside higher prices for Apple’s conventional Pro models. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299. Ludlow said both prices are $100 above those of their prior-generation equivalents.

iPhone 18 Pro Max$1,299+$100

Apple’s disclosed pricing places the Duo above the newly increased Pro lineup

Ludlow framed the Pro increases as Apple’s answer to higher memory prices: a calculation over how much added cost to absorb and how much to pass on to consumers. The announced prices are where Apple landed.

That produces a more sharply tiered upper end of the lineup. The Pro models have each moved up by $100, while the Duo opens a separate foldable tier $700 above the Pro Max’s starting price. Apple’s event paired a new form factor with price increases across the rest of its flagship range.

Ternus puts AI at the center of the iPhone pitch

Ed Ludlow said AI was a central theme of Ternus’s presentation. Ternus described the iPhone as an “intelligence personal hub”: a device that already brings together cameras, apps, and connectivity, and now has the on-device compute to serve as the center of a user’s personal AI.

The A20 Pro’s improved processing and compute power is the hardware detail Ludlow reported for the Duo. Ternus’s broader argument was about the iPhone platform as a whole. Its cameras, software, connections, and local computing capability, in his framing, give it the ingredients to become the central device for personal AI.

The foldable was the keynote’s closing hardware reveal, but the AI positioning was not confined to the Duo. Apple used the event to make two related moves: establish a more expensive foldable tier and frame the iPhone itself as the personal hub for its AI ambitions.
