Sustainable HCI Must Account for Uncertainty in Sensors and Materials
Kristin Williams, an assistant professor of computer science at Emory University, argues that sustainable computing research must treat uncertainty as a design problem, not just a measurement error. Sensors can misrepresent events, and interfaces shape how people interpret those readings and decide what to do; meanwhile, the technologies used to address environmental problems can add to them. Williams calls for systems that make uncertainty legible where people act, while preserving room for judgment rather than presenting sensor data as definitive.
