Joseph Allen is an associate professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, director of Harvard’s Healthy Buildings Program, and co-author of “Healthy Buildings: How Indoor Spaces Can Make You Sick—or Keep You Well.” His public work focuses on healthy buildings, indoor air quality, ventilation, infectious-disease risk reduction, and the health impacts of the built environment.

Healthy Buildings Should Become the Baseline, Not a Premium Upgrade

Their case is that the prevailing baseline still tolerates poor ventilation, weak filtration, chemical exposure, heat risk, inaccessible design and other hazards, even though technical fixes are already available. The remaining challenge, they say, is to make health a standard requirement in codes, retrofits and ordinary buildings rather than a premium feature in elite projects.
