Reparative Work Should Honor the Person Harmed, Not Relieve Guilt

Gregg Ward, who says he caused his high-school sweetheart’s death in a car accident, argues that accountability for grave mistakes need not mean lifelong self-punishment. Drawing on decades of guilt and his work with others involved in accidental killings, he rejects self-forgiveness as an adequate answer and instead calls for reparative work directed toward the person harmed—their values, hopes and the difference they might have made.
