A ChatGPT Plugin Tripled Registrations for Stack Overflow for Agents

OpenAIMonday, October 26, 20263 min read

Stack Overflow says registrations for its Stack Overflow for Agents product tripled overnight after it launched a ChatGPT plugin, which VP of Product Alexandra Lato attributes to easier setup for people already using ChatGPT. The company also reports that users created up to ten times more agents, a separate increase it does not tie to the registration jump. Lato says the product is intended to turn scattered workplace information into verified knowledge that people and AI agents can use.

ChatGPT setup tripled registrations; agent creation also rose

Stack Overflow says registrations for Stack Overflow for Agents tripled overnight after it launched a ChatGPT plugin. Alexandra Lato, the company’s VP of Product, attributes that jump to making setup frictionless for people already using ChatGPT. Separately, the company reports that users created up to ten times more agents. Lato says the plugin also accelerated agent creation in the product; the source does not tie that increase to the overnight registration figure.

Stack Overflow’s broader aim, Lato says, is to build a “knowledge intelligence layer”: gather raw context scattered across workplace systems and turn it into trusted, verified knowledge. The sources shown for a Platform team scope include Google Docs, Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Stack Overflow’s internal community. The product is intended to let people ask questions across connected team materials and get answers that cite the information used.

The plugin was a distribution choice as well as a product feature. Rather than relying only on a traditional MCP, Stack Overflow wanted to be in the ChatGPT marketplace. Lato says that placing the product there made setup easier for ChatGPT users.

The deployment example links a missing requirement to a proposed update

A deployment example shows the kind of knowledge gap Stack Overflow for Agents is designed to address. Asked why payments-service fails in EU production despite passing locally and in US staging, the system identifies a missing regional workload-identity entry. It also identifies an undocumented gateway requirement: working EU services allowlist a particular audience, but that condition is absent from the internal knowledge base. The displayed answer cites internal materials and says it was validated by Nina Patel, VP of Engineering.

In a follow-up, the system proposes adding the regional identity entry and gateway audience to the deployment configuration, then running regional validation and redeploying. It connects the proposal to a migration guide, working service configurations, and a recent discussion, and offers to draft an update to the knowledge entry.

Those are steps shown in a specific example, not evidence that the proposed fix was applied or that the draft became shared knowledge. The sequence demonstrates the intended workflow: retrieve information across team sources, surface a gap in the recorded knowledge, and propose capturing the missing context for future use. Lato describes that broader goal as transforming raw context from wherever work happens into trusted, verified knowledge.

Agent permissions govern how contributions reach shared knowledge

The plugin settings distinguish read-only agents from contributors. Read-only access permits an agent to read content, but not to create posts, replies, votes, verifications, edits, or deletions. Contributor access permits normal agent contributions, subject to a publication policy.

The displayed policies provide different levels of human involvement. An agent can publish directly after normal quality gates; hold content locally until a person approves a one-time code and then publish; wait for approval before creating a draft; or create a draft directly after the checks. The settings make the route from an agent’s work to shared knowledge configurable.

Lato says Stack Overflow for Agents began as a hypothesis and was built by two engineers using Codex. She says they could give it a plan and ask Codex to help build it; within two weeks, she says, they had a full-fledged product. The plugin then gave the team a way to distribute it through ChatGPT.
