Base Power Raises $1 Billion to Build a Residential Grid Battery Fleet

Base Power CEO Zach Dell argues that home batteries should be treated not as consumer backup products but as grid infrastructure: company-owned assets that can provide households with outage protection while helping utilities manage periods of peak demand. After raising a $1 billion Series D at a $13 billion post-money valuation, Base is building and operating a distributed battery fleet that it says can raise use of existing grid infrastructure and add flexible capacity without turning the company into a utility.

Zach Dell describes Base Power’s business as an effort to add usable capacity to an electricity system facing rising demand from AI, heavy-industry electrification, and transportation. The company installs batteries at homes, but the intended role of those units extends beyond the household: they can support the grid during periods of high demand while providing backup power when the grid fails.

The underlying constraint, in Dell’s account, is utilization. The grid is built for peak demand, which means much of its infrastructure is not fully used most of the time. That makes the system expensive for ratepayers and electricity consumers because assets must be sized for moments of maximum use. Batteries placed at the edge of the grid can, he argues, increase utilization and the system’s capacity factor, helping lower costs.

That is why Dell does not regard Base Power’s prospects as dependent on household solar adoption. Solar, wind, gas, and coal are generation technologies, he says; batteries are closer to transmission and distribution. In this framing, the battery is a utilization tool intended to make more productive use of infrastructure already built.

Ownership and market access turn the battery into infrastructure

Ed Ludlow raises the comparison with a Tesla Powerwall: a residential battery that can be paired with solar and used by its owner. Zach Dell says Base’s distinction begins with the hardware. Its battery is “almost three, maybe over three times the size,” and designed for faster installation.

The more consequential difference is who controls the asset. Base owns and operates the installed battery rather than selling it to the homeowner. The household can draw on it during an outage, but the company manages the unit as part of a broader fleet.

That ownership model gives Base a role that a homeowner-owned backup product does not have. With utility partners, its batteries can be used as a grid resource during high demand. In the deregulated Texas and Illinois markets where the company operates, Dell says Base uses the fleet as a wholesale power asset.

Dell contrasts this with companies selling batteries or generators as high-margin hardware products, principally for use when the grid goes down. Base’s view is that the battery should be built and operated as an infrastructure asset. The home is where the hardware sits; the business depends on coordinating many installations and on access to utility and wholesale markets that can use them.

Base also makes its battery in Austin. Dell says co-locating engineering and manufacturing keeps product designers close to the people building the product, making iteration easier and allowing the company to move faster.

Base wants to expand utility capacity, not become a utility

Ludlow suggests that Base can resemble a next-generation utility. Zach Dell rejects that description. He calls the company a modern energy-technology provider seeking to help utilities scale their own infrastructure.

Base works with municipal utilities including Austin Energy; cooperatives including CoServ and GVEC; and investor-owned utilities including El Paso Electric, according to Dell. Its role is to provide technology solutions that help those entities respond to rising electricity demand.

That positioning broadens the customer beyond a homeowner seeking outage protection. If the central problem is a system designed around peaks and underused at other times, utilities need flexible capacity as well. Base’s proposition is that distributed batteries can supply some of that flexibility without displacing the institutions that run the grid.

Dell describes a changed market around that ambition. When Base started three years ago, he says, launching an energy-technology company was relatively unusual; now such companies are common. He welcomes more entrants, arguing that the industry needs more teams working on the hard problems involved in expanding the country’s capacity to consume electricity.

The capital structure is meant to match a long-lived asset model

The $1 billion Series D arrives as Base scales operations, but Dell did not specify how the company will allocate the proceeds. The company’s disclosed investors include Ribbit Capital, Valor Equity Partners, Coatue, Altimeter, Sands Capital, and D1 Capital Partners.

Zach Dell frames the investor group less as a source of checks than as a cap table built for a company intended to “compound over many decades.” He says the new and returning investors see an opportunity to scale Base across the United States and internationally, and describes them as thought and operating partners. Essentially all major existing investors reinvested, he says.

The emphasis on patient capital follows from Base’s stated model. Rather than selling a battery and ending its relationship with the asset, the company intends to own and operate batteries installed across homes, coordinate them with utility partners, and in Texas and Illinois use them as wholesale power assets. Its financing story is therefore tied to building a long-duration fleet, not simply moving more hardware through a retail channel.

There’s an incredible inflection happening in energy consumption in America. And it’s never been more important for the utilities to kind of step up and adapt.
