Apple Prepares Siri AI Smart-Home Hub for Fall
Apple is preparing a smart-home hub with a roughly seven-inch display that would put Siri AI at the centre of voice control, video calls and connected-device management, Bloomberg’s Dana Wollman reports. Wollman says Apple delayed its entry into the category while its software teams caught up on AI, but now expects the company to unveil new home devices this fall. The reported hub would target the shared household-screen role established by Amazon Echo and Google Nest products.
Apple’s smart-home entry is being timed around Siri AI
Apple is reportedly preparing a smart-home hub built around Siri AI, a move Dana Wollman said had been delayed while the company’s software engineers caught up on artificial intelligence. Apple had wanted to enter the category earlier, she said, but is now ready to unveil devices in the area this fall.
Apple has been working on this a long time and really wanted to enter this space earlier, but it was waiting for its software engineers to catch up on the AI side.
The reported product would place Apple in the market shaped by Amazon Echo and Google Nest devices: a central device in the home where voice is a primary form of interaction. Ed Ludlow framed the category as one built around that voice-led household role. Wollman described Apple as a “noted laggard” on AI, but said Siri AI is now out and is central to the company’s renewed hardware effort.
The report gives no price for the hub. Its stated timing is an expected fall unveiling.
The hub is meant to be a shared control screen
Dana Wollman said the smart-home hub would have a roughly seven-inch display, with uses including video conferencing and controlling connected objects around the home. That makes it more than a voice speaker: the device is being positioned as a shared screen and control point for household activity.
Wollman also suggested recipe use in a kitchen as a likely popular application. An on-screen Alexa display showing recipe recommendations illustrated that category use case, rather than an announced Apple interface or feature set. Other imagery showed Apple TV 4K and a HomePod with the Siri prompt, “Hey Siri,” placing the reported hub alongside Apple’s existing home hardware without establishing that the new device will combine their functions.
The product’s role, as described, is a central household interface: voice interaction paired with a screen for calls, information and smart-home controls.
Klarna leasing is a separate device-access programme
Apple’s newly reported Klarna arrangement is not presented as hub pricing or a financing bundle for the forthcoming smart-home device. Wollman characterized Apple Upgrade with Klarna in the United States as a device-leasing program aimed at consumers increasingly comfortable with buy-now-pay-later purchasing models.
She said the arrangement could support Apple’s services business, which she called its fastest-growing unit. The smart-home products, meanwhile, would sit within Apple’s home and wearables business. The two developments therefore concern different parts of Apple’s strategy: a reported fall hardware push in the home, and a separate model for giving customers another way to obtain devices.
